Telstra 3G network shutdown

What’s happening?

Telstra will be decommissioning their 3G network on 1 September 2024. Many businesses have EFTPOS machine(s) with a built-in Telstra 3G SIM designed to be used as a backup to either WiFi or Ethernet connectivity. All EFTPOS machines need an internet connection to process payments.

This means that from 1st September 2024, any EFTPOS machines with a 3G SIM will only be able to process transactions when connected to the internet via WiFi or Ethernet. Please note, any machines with a 4G SIM will not be impacted.

What does the 3G network shutdown mean for my business?

CounterTop EFTPOS machine

All Tyro CounterTop EFTPOS machines have a 3G back up SIM.

To get the best performance from your EFTPOS machine, we highly recommended that you connect your machine to the internet using the Ethernet cable supplied with your machine (see steps below).

Mobile EFTPOS machine

Our Mobile EFTPOS machines have either a 3G or 4G back up SIM.

When you are not connected to WiFi, if you see a 3G symbol it means your machine has a 3G back up SIM.

If you have a 4G back up SIM, you should not be impacted by the decommissioning of Telstra’s 3G network.

To get the best performance from your EFTPOS machine, we highly recommended that you connect your machine to the internet using Wi-Fi.

Tyro Pro EFTPOS machine

Our new generation Tyro Pro EFTPOS machine launched in October 2023 has a 4G back up SIM.

Not impacted by the shutdown of Telstra’s 3G network.

Tyro Go and Tyro BYO App

Tyro Go and Tap to Pay on iPhone * both use your device’s internet connection to process payments.

Not impacted by the shutdown of Telstra’s 3G network.
