Tyro enables thousands of Aussie businesses to process American Express transactions hassle-free with OptBlue launch

Tyro Payments is pleased to partner with American Express for the Australian launch of OptBlue, a new program allowing thousands of Tyro merchants to process American Express transactions hassle-free.

With OptBlue, Tyro merchants will be able to process American Express transactions at a competitive rate to other card schemes and benefit from a single onboarding journey, single servicing contact and a single settlement and invoicing experience, making end-of-day reconciliation easier.

New and existing Tyro merchants will be among the first businesses in Australia able to benefit from the OptBlue program, which was previously only available to merchants in the U.S., Canada and Mexico. OptBlue will also be available to thousands of Tyro Health providers who are enabled to provide on-the-spot claims for their patients using their Tyro terminal.

Dominic White, Chief Product Officer at Tyro Payments says: “Simplifying payment acceptance with innovative solutions built for Aussie businesses has been in Tyro’s DNA for more than 20 years. We’re thrilled to be partnering with American Express to launch yet another first-to-market platform that allows thousands of Tyro merchants to accept more payments and makes it even easier for more Australians to shop locally.”

Stacey Rylands, Vice President of Merchant Acquisition for American Express Australia and New Zealand, says: “Enabling American Express Card Members to use their Cards in more places has been a top priority for some time and we have made incredible gains across industries and key locations. The launch of OptBlue in Australia is set to supercharge the scale of our merchant Network and once and for all help put an end to the question: ‘do you accept Amex?’ at the checkout. Not only is it a win for American Express Card Members, but for thousands of additional small businesses across the country set to benefit from Amex Card Members who on average, spend 3.4 times more annually than non-Card Members and 2.4 times more per purchase. At a time when small businesses are facing significant economic pressure, every high spending customer through their doors is a huge win.”

All eligible new merchants will be enabled to accept American Express transactions through the OptBlue program when they sign up with Tyro.

Tyro powers more than 68,000 merchants across Australia with innovative payments and cashflow solutions built for small businesses. Tyro’s innovative product suite includes mobile tap-to-pay device Tyro Go, iOS payment acceptance app Tyro BYO, touch screen in-store terminal Tyro Pro, and Tyro Health Online, a dedicated unified solution for on-the-spot claims and faster contact-free payments for healthcare providers.

At checkout, the merchant will simply prompt the customer to hold their iPhone or Apple Watch to pay with Apple Pay, their contactless credit or debit card, or other digital wallet near the merchant’s iPhone, and the payment will be securely completed using NFC technology. Tap to Pay on iPhone also supports PIN entry, which includes accessibility options.

Apple’s Tap to Pay on iPhone technology also uses the built-in features of iPhone to keep businesses’ and customers’ data private and secure. When a payment is processed, Apple doesn’t store card numbers on the device or on Apple servers.

Tyro CEO Jon Davey said: “Tap to Pay on iPhone is a fantastic simple and secure way for new or existing Tyro customers to accept payments using only their iPhone, anytime, anywhere – without the need for additional hardware. We are excited to provide this new offering to our customers, providing greater flexibility when staff are working on-site or on the move. It couldn’t be simpler. Just download the Tyro BYO App to start accepting customer payments on your iPhone in minutes.”

Tap to Pay on iPhone enables Tyro customers to use a contactless payment acceptance solution that is easy to set up and use. Merchants will be able to unlock contactless payment acceptance through the Tyro BYO App on an iPhone XS or later running iOS 16.4 or later in two quick steps — simply set up an account in the Tyro Portal and download the Tyro BYO App from the Apple App Store to start accepting payments.

Australian businesses can also sign up for Tap to Pay on iPhone through distribution partnerships, including through Telstra. Telstra customers can access everything they need to set up their small business by purchasing an iPhone, signing up for Tap to Pay on iPhone and getting started on the Tyro BYO App.

The Tyro BYO App is a customised SoftPOS merchant application developed with fintech company, Soft Space.

About Tyro

Tyro is a technology-focused and values-driven Group providing Australian businesses with payment solutions and value-adding business banking products. The Group provides simple, flexible, and reliable payment solutions as a merchant acquirer, along with complementary business banking products. More than 66,800 Australian merchants chose to partner with Tyro at 31 December 2022. The Group processed $21.7 billion in transaction value in the first half of FY23. The Group generated $95.2 million in normalised gross profit, originated a record $72.7 million in loans and held merchant deposits totaling $95.0 million. Tyro is Australia’s fifth largest merchant acquiring bank by number of terminals in the market, behind the four major banks.

The business was founded in 2003 with a goal of being the most efficient acquirer of electronic payments in Australia. Tyro has a track record of innovation, creating purpose-built solutions and being first to market. This approach saw the company become the first technology company to receive an Australian specialist credit card institution licence in 2005. In 2015 that licence was replaced by the award of an Australian banking licence, making Tyro the first new domestic banking licensee in over a decade.

Payments are at the core of Tyro’s business, using its proprietary core technology platform to enable credit and debit card acquiring. This offering is enhanced by features purpose-designed for those merchants who choose to partner with the company, including Point of Sale systems integrations, least-cost routing (Tap & Save) and alternative payment types such as integrated Alipay. While traditionally focused on in-store payments, Tyro has recently expanded into eCommerce. Further, Tyro provides value-adding solutions to its partners, such as loans in the form of merchant cash advances and fee-free, interest-bearing merchant transaction accounts.

Tyro has a team of more than 600 people, approximately half of whom are in technology roles

From today Australians can purchase Tyro Go, a mobile EFTPOS reader that accepts payments on the go, from over 400 Australia Post stores across the country.

The expansion to Australia Post stores is an extension of the Tyro Telstra Alliance – with Tyro Go hitting the shelves in more than 400 Telstra stores and Telstra Business Technology Centres at the beginning of February.

“From Airlie Beach to Alice Springs, Geelong to Geraldton, Tyro Go will be available for purchase at Australia Post or Telstra stores in every state and territory,” said Tyro CEO Jon Davey.

“This incredible expansion means there will be over 800 stores Australia wide where customers will be able to buy a Tyro Go EFTPOS reader, walk out, and be taking payments that same day.”

Tyro Go is perfect for mobile businesses that need to take payments on the go, such as tradies, cafes, or pop-up stores. The low cost, easy to use, portable device connects wirelessly to smart phones or tablets – meaning it can be used anywhere someone has a Wi-Fi or mobile internet connection (3G, 4G, or 5G).

“Australia Post is one of Australia’s biggest supporters of small businesses and our commitment grows even stronger now that Tyro Go will be available in over 400 of our stores,” said Kayla Le Cornu, General Manager, Retail Product and Supply Chain, Australia Post.

“Tyro, Telstra, and Australia Post are three proudly Australian businesses that are helping small and larger businesses, and sole traders, including those in regional Australia, simplify the way they take payments,” added Tyro CEO Jon Davey.

The Tyro Go EFTPOS reader is small enough to fit in your pocket, connects to compatible iOS or Android smart devices, and can send branded receipts via email. It accepts Visa, Mastercard, EFTPOS, American Express, JCB, as well as digital wallets like Apple Pay, Google Pay, and Samsung Pay. Tyro Go is complemented by Tyro’s new digital onboarding platform which enhances the experience for businesses signing up for Tyro products.
