Ethics, inclusivity & the Women of Tyro this IWD

We all benefit

The theme of this year’s IWD is #EachforEqualbolstering the idea that each one of us can help create a gender equal world.

We asked Tyros from around the business about what that idea meant to them, and why it’s so important.

“Each for equal to me means everyone gets an equal opportunity regardless of gender, age, sexual orientation, disability, race, religion, relationship status. The facts and data don’t lie which show that a more equal workplace equates to better business results, more innovation, better customer experience and a happier workplace. But it isn’t just in business, everyone should be fighting for equality, in all facets of life, because everyone is a woman, man, mother, father, daughter, son, wife, husband and above all else it’s the right thing to do for all humans!”

“We live in a world where we identify ourselves not as men and women, but as individuals. In the workplace that is exactly how it should be in terms of equal rights, privileges, equal everything. Women of Tyro is an ideal platform to help make this a reality. “

“As a leader of a very diverse team of engineers, I get to see first-hand the benefit of being #EachForEqual. Our diversity makes us more effective and collaborative, and everyone in the team has been part of making that happen.”
Yacine
Delivery Lead, Engineering

“I really believe in the need for everyone in Tyro to get behind gender diversity and genuine equality. We all understand that our customers benefit from greater diversity of thought and approach within our teams, as it helps us find better ways to solve problems – we can’t make that happen without being #EachForEqual!”
Terri
Delivery Lead, Engineering

Each for equal is about the sum of our individual contributions towards equality compounding to effect change. These changes could be at the smallest level and yet have a resounding effect. If we do not keep equality front of mind by reminding ourselves (even with a small commitment) then we will not be able to make progress and highlight the inequality that still exists in our world.

Visibility and inclusion matters – on every day of the year

The Women of Tyro is a committee founded in 2018 as a way to encourage Tyro women to connect with and learn from each other. An employee- rather than HR- or brand-led initiative, the committee women’s runs mentoring programs, career development sessions, speaking events and more.

Founding member, Denise, had a clear vision from the get-go:

“When I initially came up with the Women of Tyro group, I wanted it to be a safe space for the women of our company – to come together, to support, and inspire one another to succeed.”

The committee is run by employees volunteering their own time, and in the words of Tyro’s Chief People Officer, Yvette, they work “tirelessly and passionately to advance gender diversity”.

Straight from the top

In addition to the inroads made by Women of Tyro, the advancement of diversity, inclusion and belonging is a key focus for everyone in the business – including our People Team, the Executive Team and our Board.

For example:
• Gender pay analysis applied across all levels of the salary review process
• Unconscious bias training – from what you don’t know to what you need to know
• Career enhancement and support – progressing the paths of women in our workplace   In addition to the inroads made by Women of Tyro, the advancement of diversity, inclusion and belonging is a key focus for everyone in the business – driven by our People Team, the Executive Team and our Board. Tyro quotas

While Tyro doesn’t have mandated quotas per se, we do have a 5-year goal to raise gender diversity to 50%. We have a way to go yet, but with the talent we’re attracting at Tyro, we’re well on track:
• Board – 33.3% women
• Executive Team – 38.5%
• People Leaders – just under 40%.
